Altrincham Hippodrome/Studio 1/Cannon

I recently drew one of the cinemas of my childhood, Sale Odeon, which you can see here.

This is the other cinema I frequently visited, just up the road in Altrincham. It didn't have a name, as such; it was just 'Alty pictures', but it was advertised as Studio 1 before becoming a Cannon Group cinema in the 1980s.

It opened in 1912 as the Hippodrome but closed in 1963. Leeds-based Star Cinemas took it over and re-opened it as an 'entertainment centre,' comprising a cinema and bingo hall. I saw Star Wars here and, around the same time, Disney's Pete's Dragon and The Rescuers. The last film I saw here was House, the 1985 horror comedy starring William Katt and George Wendt.

It finally closed its doors in late 1986 and was demolished three months later, yet another victim of the multiplexes springing up at the time.

Because of the facade's design, this drawing required almost an almost brick-by-brick approach, and, frankly, I probably wouldn't have started it if I had known how long it would take to get the details right (or as right as they can be as, given the scarcity of images that I could gather for reference).

I also ended up having to research other Star Cinemas venues to find the right door handles, lobby stills cases, and the EMI Bingo typeface.

If you have any high-resolution photos of the building, let me know.
